New Delhi: Ranchi Police on Sunday arrested three people in connection with an alleged conspiracy to topple the Jharkhand government, reported ANI. The arrests were carried out after MLA Kumar Jaimangal lodged a complaint at the Kotwali station in the capital city expressing suspicions over attempts to destabilise the Hemant Soren-led government.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was launched by the Ranchi Police, and searches were carried out at various places.

During these searches, three people named Abhishek Kumar Dubey, Amit Singh, and Niwaran Prasad Mahto were arrested.

According to the police, the trio have confessed to the conspiracy and were in contact with some politicians.

Congress MLA Bandhu Tirkey demanded a probe into the allegations and said that the role of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cannot be ignored especially after the experience in other states.

“Factoring in BJP’s nature to topple the government in states like MP, Goa, Karnataka, you can’t deny such a possibility. There is no smoke without fire. It can be said that MLAs are being lured, given the revelations being made but the matter should be probed,” said Tirkey.

“Until things are not clear, it is not right to level allegations against anyone. But given the past experience in other states, we can’t overlook BJP’s involvement (in this matter),” he added.

Meanwhile, ex-Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi accused the government of using the state police to spread terror.

He also claimed that the arrested persons were just common folk who sell fruits, vegetables, and work as labourers.

Marandi demanded that the trio be released immediately and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigation be launched into the matter.

“Police should tell people on what basis they have arrested these people and put such serious allegations on them. To destabilise the government is not an ordinary allegation,” he said.

He also said that if the government does not initiate a probe into the matter his party would protest against the government.

Relative of one of the accused, Sonu Mahto said, “Niwaran Prasad Mahto is a fruit seller. On the night of July 22 at 1 pm, the police came and apprehended him. When we asked the DSP and other senior officials, they said that they would release him after interrogation over a nominal matter.”
