New Delhi: Former JNU president, Kanhaiya Kumar and his friend Jignesh Mevani are set to join the Congress party.
Sources say the two could join the grand old party as early as next week. Kanhaiya Kumar had contested the last Lok Sabha polls from Bihar as a candidate of CPI but failed to win the polls. Jignesh Mevani, on the other hand, is already serving as an MLA in Gujarat.
The move is bound to be seen with much curiosity since both of the leaders have had a previous tryst with the adage of being “anti-national“. Kanhaiya Kumar was even jailed for making an alleged seditious speech.
The entry of the two can increase the divide between the old and new guard of the Congress party. There has been a huge row within the party in terms of the ideological moorings being set by Rahul Gandhi.
The move can potentially raise a question in a politically sensitive environment that is being set by right-wing nationalists, can a party wanting to be an extreme left in its worldview succeed?
The old guard of the party wants to adopt a more moderate and pragmatic line of thought, which doesn’t keep hitting at Narendra Modi individually. But Rahul Gandhi clearly thinks otherwise.
