Bengaluru, Karnataka: Keeping in view the Karnataka, the state government on Thursday postponed the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, which were earlier scheduled to begin from June 21.

“The increasing COVID cases in the state coupled with the concerns of parent-students and many school associations has resulted in this decision. A suitable call will be taken after the second wave of COVID-19 dies down,” said the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Thursday.

Kumar has also assured that the revised date will be announced much ahead of schedule.

Karnataka has overtaken Maharashtra to become the worst-hit state in the country due to the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the latest official data, Karnataka now has the most active COVID cases in the country.

With 5,87,472 active coronavirus cases, the state now has nearly 30,000 more active COVID cases than Maharashtra, which reported 5,61,347 cases on May 12. The state reported 16,446 news cases on Wednesday, taking their total tally to 20,13,193. The state also reported 480 deaths due to the novel coronavirus, taking the total to 19,852.


Meanwhile,  India reported more than 3,62,000 new infections in the last 24 hours. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare the country recorded 3,62,727 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday morning. A significant increase of nearly 12,000 cases was seen from the previous day high of 3,48,421 infections on May 12. 

These new COVID-19 cases have pushed the country’s total tally to 2,37,03,665 in the country as of May 13.
