New Delhi: Kerala BJP Chief K Surendran on Thursday (June 3) strongly refuted the allegations that he had bribed tribal leader and chairperson of Janadhipathya Rashtriya Party (JRP), C K Janu for contesting in the state legislative elections as an NDA candidate.
His response came a day after several TV channels broadcasted a conversation between him and Praseeda Azheekode, state treasurer of the JRP in which Surendran was heard speaking about giving a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to Janu.
The BJP leader also said that the charges against him were an attempt to tarnish the image of the BJP.
“I am not saying that the conversation did not take place. But Janu has not asked for any money from me nor have I given anything to her. Let the probe agencies check the authenticity of the audio clip,” he said to reporters.
The 51-year-old added that hundreds of people used to call him during the election and he can’t remember every conversation that took place.
Azheekode claimed that though Janu initially demanded Rs 10 crore and a seat in the Union Cabinet, she later was paid only Rs 10 lakh.
She contested from the Sultan Bathery constituency but lost to I. C. Balakrishnan of Congress.
Surendran also attacked the media alleging that some journalists were conspiring with the ruling CPI(M) party to defame BJP.
“A section of the media is conniving with the CPI(M) not only to defame the BJP but to divert attention from the issue of controversial gold smuggling and related cases,” the BJP leader alleged.
“They tried to overthrow the democratic process. The central investigative agencies are silent now, the people can see it. This proves that they are working as per the whims and fancies of the BJP,” he said.
Several BJP leaders have been questioned in the case of the highway robbery of hawala money at Kodakara.
According to the complainant, Shamjeer Samsudheen an unknown gang had stopped his car on the Kodakara flyover and robbed Rs 25 lakh.
However, the police investigations showed that it was hawala money and the actual amount could be about Rs 3.5 crores.
RSS leader and BJP state organisation secretary M Ganeshan and party office secretary Gireesh have already been questioned by a special investigation team regarding the case.
