New Delhi: India and China will hold the 14th round of corps commander-level talks on Wednesday with a focus on making some forward movement in the disengagement process in the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

The talks will take place at the Moldo area on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, in order to ease tension and bring back normalcy to the high altitude war zone which has been a trigger point between the two sides for over a year.

The Indian side is expected to press for disengagement around the Hot spring, which has been a friction point left for resolution between the two sides.

As per reports, India and China will be represented by new Generals at the 14 Corps Commander-level talks. Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, Corps Commander of the Indian Army’s new 14 ‘Fire and Fury’, will attend the meeting on behalf of India, succeeding Lt-Gen PGK Menon while South Xinjiang Military District chief Maj-Gen Yang Lin will represent the Chinese side. He replaces deputy Maj-Gen Zhao Zhidan who led the talks last time.

The meeting follows the 13th round of talks which took place on October 10 and but ended in a stalemate. The Chinese side at that time had refused to complete the stalled troop disengagement at Patrolling Point-15 (PP-15) in the Hot Springs-Gogra-Kongka La area.

Both sides failed to make any headway in the talks with the Indian Army saying after the dialogue that the “constructive suggestions” made by it were not agreeable to the Chinese side, which also could not provide any “forward-looking” proposals.

In their virtual diplomatic talks on November 18, India and China agreed to hold the 14th round of military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of complete disengagement in remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

According to a PTI report, the Indian side had sent at least two proposals for the 14th round of talks in the last two months but the Chinese side did not respond to them positively.

The Ladakh Standoff

The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.

Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.

Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector.
