Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray Meets PM Modi in Delhi, Discusses Maratha Quota, Other Issues

New Delhi: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, along with other state ministers in his delegation, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday. Maharashtra CM Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and Cabinet Minister Ashok Chavan had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

During a press meet, Maharashtra CM said, “We held a discussion on various topics and Prime Minister Modi ji listened to us. PM Modi ji said he will take these issues and look into them. The issues discussed were Maratha reservation, political reservations for Other Backward Classes, land allocation for Metro Car shed in Kanjur, GST returns and change in the National Disaster Response Force parameters to provide assistance. We also discussed classical language tag to Marathi Bhasha Din among topics.”

“A delegation of Maharashtra government met PM Modi today. 8-10 issues, including Maratha reservation, were discussed in the meeting. We hope that the vaccination process will be further quickened after today’s meeting with PM Modi,” said Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Tuesday.

According to ANI sources, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray arrived at Delhi’s IGI Airport, ahead of his meeting with PM Modi on Tuesday morning. A delegation of state government led by CM Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar discussed issues like Maratha reservation, OBC reservation, and cyclone relief during their meeting with the PM in the capital.

The meeting came after Uddhav Thackeray wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, requesting him to take steps to declare the Maratha community in the state as Socially and Educationally Backward (SEBC) to enable them to claim the reservation in education and public employment at least to 12 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

On May 5, a five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Hemant Gupta and Ravindra Bhat in its judgment said that that people from the Maratha community cannot be declared as educationally and socially backward community to bring them within the reserved category.
