New Delhi: Opposition leaders in Maharashtra met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari on Tuesday seeking a floor test of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state Assembly on June 30. The Governor was approached by several MLAs and BJP leaders led by former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“We’ve given a letter to the Mahrashtra Governor and told him that the 39 Shiv Sena MLAs are saying that they don’t want to be in the coalition government with NCP and Congress. It shows the MVA government has lost the majority. We’ve requested the Governor to direct the Chief Minister to immediately prove his majority through the floor test,” news agency ANI quoted Fadnavis as saying.

If the floor test is called, the Uddhav camp is likely to approach the court against it. The NCP, a coalition member, has also questioned Governor Koshiyari’s ability to call for a floor test.

With this development, the political crisis intensified in the state, which has been witnessing a power tussle within the Shiv Sena since June 21, when senior party leader Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against the party leadership. Shinde has demanded that the Sena break away from the MVA with NCP and Congress, and support old ally BJP in forming a coalition government with Fadnavis as the chief minister.
