New Delhi: As Maharashtra Minister Eknath Shinde leads a rebellion against his party, this image from June 19, 2022, when the Shiv Sena celebrated its 56th anniversary, explains what could have triggered it.
In a photo from the day of celebration, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya Thackeray, a first time MLA and first time Cabinet Minister, were seen taking the centre stage. Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde, a senior party leader and once close to party patron Balasaheb Thackeray, could be seen sidelined.
India Ahead‘s Political Editor Aditi Ananthanaryanan decoded the photo that holds the key to Maharashtra’s political turmoil. “This is one of the biggest factor as to why Eknath Shinde is rebelling,” she said.
The alleviation of Aaditya Thackeray to being second in command in Shiv Sena and the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, and the prominence given to him over the senior leader is the reason behind the dissent.
Eknath Shinde was also chosen by the party to accompany Aaditya Thackeray in his recent visit to Ayodhya.
While this discontent has been brewing over the past few months, the Shiv Sena and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray were caught off-guard when Shinde rebelled, along with more than 30 other MLAs. Shinde has demanded that the Shiv Sena support a BJP-led government in Maharashtra.
