Uttar Pradesh: The Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Monday condemned the gang-rape of a Dalit woman in Gautam Buddh Nagar and called for immediate action against the accused.
A middle-aged Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Jewar area by men known to her on Sunday morning, officials said. The incident took place when the woman had gone outside her village to cut grass while the key accused, 28, had come there to graze his cattle, the officials added.
“The incident of gang rape of a Dalit woman in district Gautam Buddha Nagar is very sad and very shameful. The BJP government of UP should bring justice to the victim’s family and take strict legal action against the accused, this demand of BSP.” Mayawati wrote in a tweet in Hindi.
The FIR was lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intently to secretly or wrongfully confine a person), 376D (gang-rape), among others, the police said.
The accused have also been booked under the stringent Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the police added.
