New Delhi: Two militants were killed in twin counter-militant operations in Pulwama district of South Kashmir and Srinagar city on Friday. Identified as Shahid Bashir Sheikh and Tanzil, the two militants were collaborators in killings of prominent chemist ML Bindroo and two teachers, Supinder Kaur and Deepak Chand, in Srinagar.
Police officials said that acting on a specific tip off about the presence of certain militants in the area, a combing operation was mounted by Army and SOG of J&K Police in Wahibug village of Pulwama district of South Kashmir.
They said as the forces encircled one of the suspected house, Sheikh, who was hiding inside fired upon security party triggering an encounter in which the militant was killed. Shahid Bashir Shekh, who belonged to Srinagar, was also involved in recent killing of a civilian Mohammad Shafi Dar in Batamaloo area of Srinagar on October 2, according to Vijay Kumar, IG Police, Kashmir.
Barely two hours after the South Kashmir firefight, another gunfire broke out between security forces and militants in Bemina area of Srinagar. During the brief exchange of fire, one militant was gunned down. The slain militant was identified as Tanzil, also a resident of Srinagar, who had a hand in killing of police sub-inspector Arshid Ahmad in Khanyar area of Srinagar on September 12.
The security forces have been on hunt following a spate of targeted civilian killings in Kashmir Valley since October 2. Multiple operations have been launched by the forces in parts of Kashmir since past seven days, in which 11 militants have been killed.
“After civilian attacks, we started offensive operation. 8 encounters took place and 11 terrorists were killed. After civilian killings, terrorists in Srinagar city fled to South Kashmir, of which one was killed in Shopian and Shahid, who had killed PDD staff, was neutralised in today’s Pulwama encounter,” said Kumar.
“AK-47 used (by Shahid) was recovered. He was involved in many attacks.The second encounter took place in Bemina. A local terrorist Tanjil, affiliated with TRF-LeT, was hiding. We gave him opportunity to surrender, he opened fire and was killed in Police’s retaliatory firing,” he said.
