Moplah Rebellion Cannot be Called a Part of Indian Freedom Struggle: Ram Madhav to India Ahead

He was speaking on the controversy that has erupted after the Indian Council of Historical Research recommended that names of 387 people who participated in the Moplah rebellion be removed from ‘the list of freedom fighters.

New Delhi: Moplah rebellion cannot be called as a part of the Indian freedom struggle, RSS leader Ram Madhav told India Ahead on Wednesday. He was speaking on the controversy that has erupted after the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) recommended that the names of 387 people who participated in the rebellion be removed from ‘the list of freedom fighters.

Madhav said that it was initially the Left government in Kerala that gave the people who led the rebellion the title of freedom fighters.

“The whole tamasha (drama) of declaring the whole Moplah rebellion participants as freedom fighters happened in 1971 when there was a Left government in Kerala led by C Achita Menon,” he said.

“”Moplahs until 1970 were understood to be a violent and aggressive mob which had indulged in arson looting and killing of Hindus raping of women and many such atrocities,” he added.

Nobody had looked at them as freedom fighters, he continued.

The 57-year-old said that this distortion of history was a handiwork of the left government in 1971 in which the Moplah marauders were converted into freedom fighters overnight.

“This distortion has been corrected by the ICHR headed by Mr Isaac who is an academician, who is not a party person from Kerala and decided that these persons cannot be called freedom fighters,” Madhav said.

He also said that there were some Hindus also in the list of people whose names have been recommended for being removed.

“Moplah rebellion cannot be called a part of the freedom movement,” he said.

He also said that the controversy started when the present Left government in the state planned to celebrate the 100 years of the rebellion with movies celebrating the revolts.

Madhav said that those who are supporting the Moplah rioters should look at what Mahatma Gandhi, Annie Besant and Drb BR Ambedkar had said about them.

“Except for the commit record, except for the Left narrative all other narratives which include the Western researchers present Moplah rebellion as a violent and anti-Hindu pogrom,” he said.
