Mumbai Logs 11,317 New Covid Cases, 17% Lower Than Yesterday; Positivity Rate Down To 20.6%

With 13,702 cases, Mumbai recorded a drop of 16.55% in daily Covid-19 cases on Thursday from the previous day. However, this drop didn’t reflect in the state’s tally.

New Delhi: Mumbai reported 11,317 fresh Covid-19 cases and nine deaths on Friday. Out of these, 84 per cent of the patients were asymptomatic. The total number of active Covid cases stood at 84,352 as of Friday evening. The positivity rate is down to 20.6 per cent as compared to Thursday’s 21.73 per cent.

With 13,702 cases, Mumbai recorded a drop of 16.55% in daily Covid-19 cases on Thursday from the previous day. However, this drop didn’t reflect in the state’s tally as Maharashtra again reported over 46,406 cases on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Thursday demanded 40 lakh Covaxin and 50 lakh Covishield doses from the Centre to increase the vaccination coverage in the state during a meeting of the chief ministers with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the prevailing Covid-19 situation. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, however, skipped the meeting called by the PM citing health reasons.

This morning, the central government said 2.64 lakh new infections were recorded in the previous 24 hours from across the country. This is the highest single-day spike in 239 days. With 1,09,345 recoveries , active cases are now at 12,72,073, while the daily positivity rate has risen to 14.78 per cent. Confirmed cases of the Omicron variant presently stand at 5,753.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Central and state governments to continue with the pre-emptive, pro-active and collective approach followed so far in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. Chairing a virtual meeting with the chief ministers to review the situation, fueled by the highly-transmissible Omicron variant.

PM Modi called for focusing on local containment and emphasised on the need to safeguard the economy and livelihood of common people while framing Covid strategies. Modi also stated that the initial skepticism about the Omicron variant was slowly getting cleared as it has shown to have infected the general population several times faster than the previous ones.
