Patna (Bihar): Newly-elected national president of Lok Janshakti Party, Pashupati Kumar Paras on Friday stated that his election to the post was completely valid under the party’s constitution, countering claims of nephew Chirag Paswan.
“According to party’s constitution, Chirag Paswan is neither Lok Janshakti Party chief nor the Leader of the parliamentary party anymore. Yesterday’s election was fully valid under LJP’s constitution,” Paras said.
On Thursday, after rebel MPs of the LJP elected Paras as the new national president of the party, Chirag Paswan had stated that the election was invalid as it was conducted by suspended members of the party.
“Lok Janshakti Party chief is elected by the party’s national executive which has approximately 75 members. Only 9 members were there at the national executive meeting. My uncle has been elected by suspended members which is illegal,” Paswan stated.
He further added that he believes LS Speaker Om Birla Ji is not aware of LJP’s constitution and that’s why he declared Palshupati Paras as the Leader of the parliamentary party.
On Sunday, Pashupati Paras, the younger brother of Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan, along with 5 other MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and handed him a letter seeking dismissal of Chirag Paswan as party chief as well as the Lok Sabha Parliamentary party leader.
Om Birla accepted Paras as the floor leader of the party in the lower house. In a revised list of floor leaders of parties on Monday, Paras was mentioned as the Lok Sabha LJP leader.
LJP was formed by Ex Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan who was a known leader in Bihar politics. He died in October 2020, a few days before the assembly elections in the state.
