New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent 100 pairs of jute footwear for those working at Kashi Vishwanath Dham after he came to know that most of them perform their duties bare-footed as it is forbidden to wear leather or rubber footwear in temple premises, reported PTI citing its government sources.

These include priests, people performing seva, security guards, sanitation workers and others, they added.

PM Modi got the jute footwear procured and sent over to the dham so that those performing their duties don’t have to stay bare-footed in the chilling cold.

The people working at Kashi Vishwanath Dham were very happy with the gesture, said PTI reported.

A source said, “PM Modi has been deeply involved with Kashi Vishwanath Dham and keeps a tab on all issues and developments in Varanasi. This is yet another example of his attention to minute details and his concern for the poor.”

Modi had last month inaugurated the first phase of the dham, which has massively expanded the Kashi Vishwanath Temple premises and beautified the complex.

The foundation stone of the project was laid by the Prime Minister on March 8, 2019. It was the vision of the Prime Minister for a long time, to facilitate the pilgrims and devotees of Baba Vishwanath, who had to encounter congested streets and surroundings with poor upkeep, when they practised the age-old custom of taking a dip in the holy river, collecting Gangajal and offering it at the temple.

A total of 23 buildings were inaugurated in phase 1 of the project. They are providing a variety of facilities to the pilgrims visiting Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, including Yatri Suvidha Kendras, Tourist Facilitation Centre, Vedic Kendra, Mumukshu Bhavan, Bhogshala, City Museum, Viewing Gallery, Food Court, among others.
