New Delhi: Three years ago on February 14, 2019, India witnessed a heart-wrenching terror attack when 40 brave hearts were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama by a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) suicide bomber. This was the deadliest terror attack on security forces ever and brought India and Pakistan on the verge of war.

The Attack

In 2019, the afternoon of Valentine’s Day saw a large convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) making its way from Jammu to Kashmir via the National Highway 44. A suicide bomber of the Pakistan based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) tracked the convoy and rammed an explosive-laden car attacked into the CRPF convoy in the Pulwama district in Jammu & Kashmir resulting in the death of 40 personnel with several others were injured. The convoy of 78 vehicles was transporting more than 2,500 CRPF personnel.

Following the attack, India-Pakistan relations deteriorated. India revoked Pakistan’s status as the most favoured nation and custom duty on all Pakistani goods imported to India was raised to 200 per cent. The government of India also urged the Financial Action Task Force On Money Laundering (FATF) to put Pakistan on the blacklist. The Jammu and Kashmir administration revoked security provisions for separatist leaders.

In response to the attack and huge loss, India bombed JeM training camps killing a large number of terrorists.
