New Delhi: Taking responsibility for Congress’ defeat in the five Assembly elections, party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi, her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, are expected to resign at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Sunday. The Congress was ousted from power in Punjab by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and was routed in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa as well as Manipur.

However, Congress leaders like Randeep Singh Surjewala and Manickam Tagore have refuted the speculation that Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka will be quitting from their posts.

This is not the first time when Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would be offering to resign following a poll debacle. They had offered to resign after the party’s poor performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, too, but the proposal was rejected by the CWC.

The CWC is slated to meet at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office in New Delhi at 4 pm on Sunday to discuss the party’s performance in the five states.

Congress’ dissident leaders called G-23, too, will be raising their demand for reforms in the party during the CWC meeting, news agency ANI reported. There are chances that AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal might quit.

The party leaders are also expected to raise demand for internal elections of the party during the CWC meeting.

After Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as party president in 2019, Sonia Gandhi has been acting as the interim president. The party has been struggling to find a permanent replacement.

The results of five Assembly elections have pushed the Congress further to the sidelines of national politics. The grand old was expecting to revive its prospects for the Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2024. The current situation after Congress’s loss in the five states is such that it will soon see an emerging challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress which might replace it as a principal challenger to the BJP.
