New Delhi: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police on Saturday (June 26) questioned Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal for four hours in relation to the 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident. Badal was the state’s home minister in 2105 when police fired on a crowd who were protesting against the incidents of desecration of religious texts.
The 58-year-old reached the Punjab Police headquarters for questioning at 11 am on Saturday..
He was joined by SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, N K Sharma, and Daljit Singh Cheema who accompanied him to show support.
The former minister has already termed the investigation as “malicious”.,
“I am indebted to the party workers for giving so much love and respect,” Badal tweeted.

The SAD leader was questioned by the Additional Director General of Police (Vigilance Bureau) L K Yadav who is the chief of the new SIT team that was formed on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Earlier, the High Court had quashed the findings of the older SIT which was led by former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh.
Singh resigned from his post soon after and joined the Aam Aadmi Party on June 21.
In 2015, a crowd was protesting at Kotkapura against the alleged desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot after which the police fired at them.
In a separate incident, police also fired at protesters at Behbal Kalan, also in Faridkot which left two people dead.
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu in a tweet slammed Badal and said that the new SIT will surely bring out the truth.
Sidhu tweeted, “6 Yrs since sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. No Justice in 2 yrs of your rule. No Justice in the following 4.5 yrs.. Today, New SIT inches closer to Justice for Punjab’s Soul & you cry of political interference. Political interference was that which delayed Justice by 6 yrs.”
