Tamil Nadu Extends Covid-19 Lockdown Till July 19, Shops Allowed to Stay Open Till 9 PM

Tamil Nadu is currently the fourth highest state in terms of Covid-19 cases in India. The state has reported more than 25 lakh cases since March 2020.

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu on Saturday extended the Covid-19 lockdown in the state to July 19 but allowed a few relaxations in lockdown curbs as cases continue to decline. Under the new guidelines, shops can remain open till 9 pm as compared to 8 pm earlier.

Hotels, tea shops, bakeries, roadside shops, snack shops are also allowed to function at 50 per cent capacity.

However, the government added that Covid-19 norms should be strictly followed in these places and failure to do so will invite action by the authorities.

50 people are now allowed to attend marriage and wedding ceremonies while the maximum number of people at a funeral is capped at 20.

Schools, colleges, theatres, liquor bars, swimming pools, zoos will continue to remain closed until further orders.

Last week, the government had allowed hotels and guesthouses to function.

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 3,039 new Covid-19 cases and 69 deaths.

With this, the total infected and the fatalities so far rose to 25,13,098 and 33,322 respectively, the Health Department said.

3,411 recoveries were reported during the same period and the current active case tlly in the state is 33,224.

Meanwhile, on Saturday reported a slight dip with 42,766 new Covid-19 cases, down from 43,393 cases reported a day earlier on Friday. The cases were fewer by 627 cases however the dip was lower than 2,499 cases reported on Friday. The country saw a jump of 2,159 cases on Thursday, according to the health ministry.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, the death tally increased to 1,206 deaths in the last 24 hours up against 911 mortalities recorded on the previous day.
