Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth said on Monday (July 12) that he has no plans of entering politics and dissolved his outfit Rajini Makkal Mandram.

“I have no plans of entering politics in future,” said Rajinikanth.

I had thought of starting a political party and getting involved in politics. But the timing was such that it was not possible. I have no intention of getting involved in politics in the future, so I kindly inform you that the Rajini Makkal Mandram will function as a fan charity forum for the benefit of the people,” Rajinikanth said in a statement.

The Rajini Makkal Mandram will be dissolved and willl continue as a fans welfare forum or “Rajinikanth Rasigar Narpani Mandram”.

The announcement followed his meeting with members of his forum to discuss its future.

Before the meeting, Rajinikanth had said he would consult his Rajini Makkal Mandram functionaries on whether or not to join politics in future, 6 months after he opted out of politics.

Indicating a fresh start to the topic of if or not he would enter politics, that was debated for over 2 decades in Tamil Nadu, the actor said ‘questions’ lingered among the Mandram functionaries on the forum’s future.

RMM was previously considered a launch vehicle for the actor’s political entry.

Last December, the actor said he would not join politics, citing factors like his health condition, and undergoing kidney transplant in 2016.

The actor, who returned from America days ago after a health check-up told reporters: “Should the Makkal Mandram be continued and if so, what will be its functions and these are questions among the functionaries and fans”.

On 3 December, 2020, the actor had said that he would launch his party in January 2021 ahead of the Assembly elections.

However, during the last week of December last year, he took a u-turn and announced that he would not join politics. Since then, several functionaries had joined political parties including the DMK.
