Washington: Elon Musk, an American entrepreneur and the founder of Tesla, said that the electric vehicle company continues to face “a lot of challenges” with the Indian government regarding the setting up of car production in India. On Wednesday evening, a Twitter user posted a tweet asking Musk whether there was any further update of Tesla manufacturing launch in India and saying the vehicles “deserve to be in every corner of the world”.

“Still working through a lot of challenges with the government, ” Musk answered on Twitter. In 2020, Musk announced plans to open the production of Tesla electric vehicles in India. A subsidiary of Tesla, India Motors And Energy Private Limited, was established in Bengaluru in southwest India. Musk said he was ready to build a Tesla factory in India if the country reduces the cost of importing electric vehicles.

The world’s most valuable car company has pitched for a cut in import duties ahead of its local launch. Tesla has said that the levies imposed by India are the highest among large countries and that it can only consider setting up a factory locally if it succeeds with imported models.

“The government has put in place a PLI scheme for auto sector, particularly EVs under which Tesla will get benefit if they produce here. However, the company wants the government to reduce import duties on cars without any commitment of producing in India”, government sources told ET, adding, “By such tweets, Tesla is trying to put pressure on government using social media, and this is not the first time.”

India currently imposes 100% import duty on cars with CIF (cost, insurance, freight) value of over $40,000 and 60% on cheaper vehicles. Tesla has sought 40% import duty on fully assembled electric cars. Musk, who regularly features on Bloomberg’s index of the richest on the planet, has previously said the duty structure for cars running on the electric powertrain should not be out of kilter with India’s climate-change objectives.
