New Delhi: If people follow covid-19 appropriate behavior and India is able to vaccinate a large population, then the third wave of Covid-19 may not even come, stated All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director, Dr Randeep Guleria on Thursday.

“It depends on how people behave. If we are careful and have good vaccination coverage, then the third wave of Covid-19 may not arrive, or it will be of lesser impact,” said Dr Guleria.

“More data is required on the mixing of doses. Studies have stated that it may be effective but may have more than usual side effects. More data is needed before saying that it is a policy that should be tried,” he told ANI about issue of mixing of vaccine doses.

Speaking on the active number of Covid-19 cases in India, the AIIMS director said that there are certain areas where case positivity is high and needs to be properly addressed in order to contain the spread.

“Cases are declining but there are certain areas where case positivity is still high. We need to address the issue aggressively in those areas. These areas should not become hotspots, leading to the spread of infection in other areas,” he stated.

Meanwhile, India on Thursday reported 48,786 new Covid-19 cases, up from the previous day’s tally of 45,951 cases according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare statistics. The cases went up by almost 2800 as compared to the previous day. 1005 deaths were reported in the same period.

On discharges, 61,588 people recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours taking the total tally to 2,94,88,918 patient recoveries. Active cases in the country declined from 5,37,064 on Wednesday to 5,23,257 on Thursday.
