The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday (March 10) announced that Tirath Singh Rawat will be appointed as the new chief minister of Uttarakhand, just a day after Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned from the post.

The BJP MP is scheduled to officially take oath as the next chief minister of Uttarakhand at 4 pm on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old veteran leader was BJP party chief in Uttarakhand from 2013-15 and Chaubttakhal’s MLA from 2012-17.

Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and his cabinet on Tuesday (March 9).

His resignation was announced in an official release which read, “The Uttarakhand Governor on March 9, 2021 has accepted the resignation of the Chief Minister Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat and his cabinet members. They have been ordered to look after the administration of the state till the formation of a new government”.

Back on March 8, Trivendra Singh had submitted his resignation to Governor after being accused of corruption. Rawat along with and senior ministers Satpal Maharaj, Ajay Bhatt, Subodh Uniyal along with several MLAs was in the national capital on Monday (March 8) to meet the BJP’s senior leadership.

This comes after Rawat had approached the Supreme Court against a judgement by the Uttarakhand High Court. The HC had ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to register an FIR against the Chief Minister in a bribery case.

It was expected that the top court will announce its verdict on March 10 and sources say that the PM Modi-led BJP leadership wanted to avoid any embarrassment by asking Rawat to resign from his his post. The bribery case is related to an allegation that the relatives of the Chief Minister received bribes worth Rs 25 lakh from a Ranchi-based individual who was promised the post of Chairman in the Gau Seva Committee in Jharkhand.
