New Delhi: The Rajasthan Police on Tuesday arrested two men accused of killing a local tailor in Udaipur. The deceased named Kanhaiya was murdered for allegedly backing Nupur Sharma, the BJP spokesperson who was suspended for her derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed.
The arrested accused, identified as Ghouse Mohammed and Riyaz, are both residents of Surajpole in Udaipur. The two accused were arrested from Rajsamand. They will be produced in a court.
A special investigation team (SIT), comprising of SOG ADG Ashok Kumar Rathore, ATS IG Prafulla Kumar, one SP and Additional SP, has been constituted to investigate the matter. A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also been rushed to Udaipur.
The gruesome murder was captured on camera and the video went viral on social media, creating massive uproar, following which Udaipur witnessed protests and arson.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in Dhanmandi, Ghantaghar, Hathipol, Ambamata, Surajpol, Bhupalpura and Savina PS areas of Udaipur district. This will be effective until further orders. Internet services have been temporarily suspended for the next 24 hours in Udaipur district.
Rajasthan Chief Secretary called a high-level meeting on the issue. “A statewide alert has been issued to all SPs and IGs to increase the mobility of forces and to maintain officers on the ground. We’re assessing the law and order situation to take further decisions,” said ADG (L&O), Rajasthan.
“Two ADGPs from Jaipur, one more SP and 600 additional police force have been sent to Udaipur. The culprits will not be spared,” he said.
As tense situation prevailed in Udaipur, BJP blamed Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government for the law and order failure in the city.
Meanwhile, Gehlot termed the incident sad and an alleged that effort was being made to upset the harmony of the state. “This is because the country situation has been spoilt by Modi’s men,” he said. The Chief Minister appealed to all parties to work towards harmony.
Expressing shock and grief over the murder, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “I am deeply shocked by the heinous murder in Udaipur. Brutalism in the name of religion cannot be tolerated. Those who spread terror due to this cruelty should be punished immediately. We all have to defeat hate together. I appeal to all, please maintain peace and brotherhood.”
Condemning the murder, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, “I condemn the gruesome murder in Udaipur Rajasthan. There can be no justification for it. Our party’s consistent stand is to oppose such violence. No one can take law in their own hands. We demand that the state government takes strictest possible action. Rule of law must be upheld.”
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said, “Perpetrators of the horrific Udaipur crime are dreaded terrorists, I am certain that strictest punishment will be meted out by Shri @ashokgehlot51 ji’s govt. Religious fundamentalism of any kind only stokes hatred and must be condemned by one and all. Appeal for peace everywhere.”
