New Delhi: The Noida administration on Monday demolished the illegal construction at the residence of Shrikant Tyagi in Noida’s Sector 93. Tyagi, who claims to be a member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha, caught the attention of the media as well as the social media, after viral videos from August 5 showed him abusing and assaulting a woman resident of his society.
The videos, which drew the ire of the public, have also led to a political uproar in Uttar Pradesh.
On Monday morning, JCB’s were seen arriving at the residence of Tyagi to remove encroachment by the politician.
Police personnel in large numbers were deployed at the society since last evening, even as senior officers interacted with Grand Omaxe residents. They lauded the government’s “bulldozer” move but also sought the early arrest of Tyagi even as some of them were distributing sweets to each other on the occassion.
“We had been raising the issue of encroachment since last three years and finally it has happened. We thank the Uttar Pradesh government and the Noida Authority for it,” an elderly resident of the society told reporters.
The case took an ugly turn on Sunday night when a group of ‘alleged’ supporters of Tyagi barged into his society asking for the address of the lady who argued with him in the viral video.
According to reports, the society members then got into a heated arugment with the men and were seen arguing with police. Noida MP Mahesh Sharma arrived in the society late at night and asked the police to take action against the group of men.
Tyagi continues to be on the run with Noida Police on the lookout to arrest him.
The alleged spat took place during the day at the Grand Omaxe society in Sector-93B when the woman objected to plantation of some trees by Shrikant Tyagi, citing violation of rules even as he claimed he was within his rights to do so.
Multiple videos of the episode surfaced on social media, with one purportedly showing Tyagi hurling expletives and assaulting the woman. He also hurled abusive words for her husband and made derogatory remarks about her.
“Shrikant Tyagi has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty),” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Women Safety) Ankita Sharma told PTI.
“The charges maybe added after due investigation into the case,” the IPS officer said. Tyagi identifies himself on social media as a national executive member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha and national co-cordinator of the Yuva Kisan Samiti of the ruling party. According to officials, a local police team was sent to the housing society in the evening but Tyagi did not open the doors of his house.
“He was threatening to unleash his pet dogs on the police officials, which was preventing his arrest. The police team was waiting outside his house,” another official told PTI.
Tyagi, now absconding, has been abandoned by the party, which denied any links to him, and has Noida Police after him. The police have reportedly seized three of his luxury cars, one of which even sported the word MLA on it. Four associates of Tyagi have been detained for questioning. The plants, which he fought over, have also been uprooted by the residents of the society.
BJP has clearly distanced itself from Tyagi, with Fatehpur Sikri MP and national president of BJP Kisan Morcha, Rajkumar Chahar, releasing a video denying that he was a member. “In a video that has gone viral on social media, a man named Shrikant Tyagi can be seen misbehaving with a woman. I want to inform all of you that he neither is nor was a national executive member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha. It is my wish that the government takes appropriate legal action against him,” the BJP MP said.
Tyagi has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty).
