New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Saturday (January 8, 2022) announced the dates for Uttarakhand Assembly elections. The state will vote on February 14, while the counting of votes will take place on March 10 and results will be declared simultaneously.

With the number of COVID-19 cases rising across the country, the Uttarakhand Assembly elections 2022 has taken an interesting turn with all political parties set to rely on digital campaigns. The Uttarakhand Assembly elections will witness online campaigns for all political parties as dharnas, demonstrations and political rallies will remain suspended in the state till January 15.

The term of the current Assembly elected in 2017 will expire on March 23, 2022. The 2017 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election was the fourth Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) of the state of Uttarakhand which was formed in 2000 by dividing Uttar Pradesh.

The last elections in the state for 69 out of the 70 seats in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly took place on February 15, 2017. Elections for the Karnaprayag constituency was postponed to March 9, 2017, due to the death of BSP candidate Kuldeep Kanwasi in a road accident.

BJP won 57 seats in the 70-member Assembly of the hill-state to form the government. The Congress was limited to 11 seats, and two seats went to two independent candidates.

Trivendra Singh Rawat, who had been an RSS activist from 1983 to 2002, was sworn-in as the state chief minister after BJP secured a massive majority. However, in March 2021, he was replaced by Tirath Singh Rawat, who served for a very short term and as Pushkar Singh Dhami took over as the state CM in July 2021 to become the 11th chief minister of Uttarakhand.

In two decades of Uttarakhand’s existence, the state has witnessed 11 politicians occupying the post of the chief minister since 2000 after the state was carved out from Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier in the 2012 Assembly elections, no political party was able to win a majority in the state. However, the Congress formed the government with the help of PDF under the leadership of Vijay Bahuguna. He was then replaced by Congress’ Harish Rawat in 2014.
