New Delhi: In a bizarre case, an Uttarakhand-based couple sued their only son and his wife, demanding either a grandchild “within a year” or ₹5 crore as compensation.

“I gave my son all my money, got him trained in America. I don’t have any money now. We have taken a loan from bank to build home. We are troubled financially and personally. We have demanded Rs 2.5 crore each from my son and daughter-in-law in our petition,” said SR Prasad.

“They were wedded in 2016 in hopes of having grandchildren. We didn’t care about gender, just wanted a grandchild,” he added.

The Daily Mail quoted the father “It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. We had been waiting for years to become grandparents.”

“We had been trying to convince our son and his wife but they paid no heed to our demands. We are heartbroken that we will die without seeing grandchild,” the report further added. It is technically labelled a ‘domestic violence’ case.

Talking about the petition, Prasad’s lawyer AK Srivastava said that the case portrays the truth of society. “We invest in our children, make them capable of working in good firms. Children owe their parents basic financial care,” he said.

“The parents have demanded either a grandchild within a year or compensation of Rs 5 crores,” the advocate added.
