Who Is Simranjit Singh Mann, The Man Who Delivered AAP A Big Blow In Sangrur Lok Sabha Bypoll

Chandigarh: Simranjit Singh Mann, the former IPS officer and controversial Sikh hardliner and a Khalistan proponent and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) supremo could cause the biggest upset in the Sangrur Lok Sabha bypolls in 2022.

The SAD leader leads by more than 4,000 votes from his counterpart, Aam Aadmi Party’s Gurmail Singh. The counting is still on.

· 1945-born Mann cracked the Indian Administrative Service exam in 1966, and subsequently joined as the Punjab cadre IPS officer in 1967.

·  He first made headlines when on June 18. 1984, he resigned as a Group Commandant of the CISF protesting against Operation Bluestar.

·  In 1989, Mann’s party won six seats according to the Election Commission of India. However, five elected MPs offered support to Mann’s party thus making it 11 seats out of 13 in the 1989 Lok Sabha polls.

·  In that year, Mann won from Taran Tarn by polling 6.76 lakh votes which equaled 71 per cent of the total votes polled.

·  In 1999, he was again elected as an MP from the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency.

·  However, he did not enter the parliament after being stopped for carrying a kirpan, many say it was a sword.

·  Mann is a co-brother of former Chief Minister of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh.

·  He is a Sikh hardliner who is a Khalistan proponent.

·  Mann describes himself as one of the first bandi Sikhs (a Sikh prisoner). In his own words, he said, “My beard was ripped, my jaw was broken, I have no nails on my toes and I was kept in solitary confinement for five years.”
