New Delhi: Soon after becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi held a press conference where he announced that his government will waive off water and electricity bills for farmers in the state. His announcement comes at the time when the ruling party is preparing for state assembly elections in 2022.
“Punjab government stands with the farmers. We appeal to the Centre to withdraw the three farm laws…We will waive water and electricity bills of farmers,” said Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi in a press meet which was attended by General Secretary Harish Rawat and President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Navjot Singh Sidhu among many other party dignitaries in Chandigarh.
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have been at odds with the BJP-led Central government since last year when Parliament had passed three farm laws in September 2020. This led to a fallout between Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP after Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from her position as a union minister in the last Modi Cabinet.
On Monday, Channi thanked Capt Amarinder Singh for his diligent work in the state and added that he will take his work forward.
“Captain Amarinder Singh did a lot of good work for the people of Punjab. We will take forward his work,” he said.
Reiterating that the high command is supreme, he added, “The party is supreme, not the CM or the cabinet. The government will work as per the party’s ideology.”
Channi got emotional while addressing his first press conference in Chandigarh and said, “Congress has made a common man the chief minister.”
His comments come after Rawat stirred a row among party leaders like Jakhad and others. Rawat said that Congress will project Sidhu as the party face in the upcoming elections.
The BJP had earlier announced that if voted to power in Punjab, it will make a Dalit the chief minister, while the SAD, which is fighting the coming polls in alliance with the BSP, had said that its Deputy Chief Minister would be from the Dalit community.
