Yogi Adityanath Unlikely To Contest From Mathura In Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2022

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is unlikely to contest from Mathura in the state Assembly elections 2022. According to sources, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided against giving Yogi Adityanath the ticket from Mathura in western Uttar Pradesh.

BJP’s Shrikant Sharma, the power minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, is the sitting MLA from Mathura.

The 49-year-old Adityanath has never contested Assembly elections. He is currently a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. Before taking over as Uttar Pradesh CM, he had been a five-time Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur in eastern  part of the state.

When Yogi Adityanath announced that he would contest the UP Assembly elections, there were speculations that the BJP may field him from Mathura. “I am ready to fight the election from wherever the party says,” he had replied on January 1, 2022, when asked about his choice between Ayodhya, Gorakhpur or Mathura.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harnath Singh Yadav also wrote to party president JP Nadda to ask Yogi Adityanath to contest from Mathura as it is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and an important Hindu pilgrimage centre.

Yogi Adityanath contesting from Mathura would have also meant that the BJP was putting up one of its biggest face in a region where the anti-farm laws protests were the strongest in the state.

BJP has been projecting the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the redevelopment of Kashi – two important Hindu pilgrimage centres – as one of its biggest achievements in the state. The party has also made it clear that Mathura will also be redeveloped and temples in the city renovated to restore their glory.

Mathura and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh were also the epicentre of farmers protests from late 2020. The protests led by Rakesh Tikait’s Bharatiya Kisan Union ended only after the Narendra Modi government repealed the three laws in December 2021.

Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven phases on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7 to elect a new Assembly. The results will be declared on March 10 along with four other state elections – Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.
