YSRCP MP Vijaya Sai Reddy has ventured on a padyatra from Saturday (February 20) across Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh to save the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), Vizag Steel Plant from privatization. The YRS Congress is also preparing workers to organise protests in support of the workers employed at the Steel plant.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy has also clarified that the POSCO (South Korean company that was handed the Vizag Steel Plant) had come to the state to open Steel Plant at Kadapa, Nizampatnam or Bhavanapadu but not in Vizag.
The padyatra started at the Mahatma Gandhi statue from where it proceeded to Vishakhapatnam via silmetta, Sangam Junction, Kali Temple, Kancharapalem, 104 Area, Marripalem, NAD Junction, Airport, Sheela Nagar, Old Gajuwaka, and Srinagar. Ministers of the state government along with MPs, MLAs, MLCs, trade union leaders took part in the padyatra.
Furthermore, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to stop the privatization of the steel plant.
Naidu said, “The RINL Steel Plant, Vishakhapatnam was achieved through a long drawn struggle by the Telugu people who, in the 1960s rose above region, religion, and caste to unite for the cause under the slogan Visakha Ukku-Andhrula Hakku (Vizag Steel is the right of Andhraites).”
The Union government in the budget for the financial year 2021-22 has proposed to privatise a number of steel plants and seas ports and had already announced the privatisation of the steel plant the previous year with POSCO submitting plans of the joint venture in February this year.
