New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in a midnight press meet on July 28, announced that the one-year anniversary celebrations of his government has been cancelled following the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM) member Praveen Nettaru, who was hacked to death by unidentified persons on the evening of July 26.

In an impromptu press meet, which was also attended by BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel and State Health Minister Sudhakar, Mr. Bommai said that they are feeling angry, especially as Praveen’s murder comes just after the murder of Harsha in Shivamoga.

“We were planning on organising a convention tomorrow to mark the first year anniversary of our government. But after hearing the grief and sadness of the victim’s family, I don’t have mental peace. It has been decided that it’s not an ideal situation to organise the convention and therefore, it stands cancelled,” said the Karnataka CM in the press meet.

Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district witnessed protests and tense scenes on on Wednesday following 32-year-old Praveen’s murder.

With Hindutva groups calling for a bandh in the Puttur, Sullia and Kabada Taluks in the district, Puttur Assistant Commissioner M Girish Nandan on Wednesday passed an order to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code from 6 am on July 27 to 12 am on July 28. According to the order, gathering or movement of people in groups of five and more in these areas are prohibited.

Praveen’s murder comes just a few days after a man named Masood, also from the same district was attacked by a gang, following which he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. BJYM workers in the district feel that Praveen’s murder was part of a retaliatory attack and it has been reported that the police has beefed up security in Sullia and surrounding taluks to maintain law and order.
