Mangaluru Masjid Row: Right-Wing Groups Hold Rituals Outside Masjid; Claim It’s A Temple

The prohibitory order was imposed as Hindutva outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) began an agitation claiming that the Mosque was built on a temple after a “temple-like structure” was recovered recently during renovation work in the mosque.

Thiruvananthapuram: Karnataka’s port city of Mangaluru continues to remain under the grip of communal tensions as the police, on Tuesday, imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) within 500-metre radius of the Juma Masjid in Malali area on the outskirts of the city.

The prohibitory order was imposed as Hindutva outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) began an agitation claiming that the Mosque was built on a temple after a “temple-like structure” was recovered recently during renovation work in the mosque. Officials of the Mosque committee, however, had said that the structure was of an Indo-Arabic design, which can be largely seen in the coastal regions.

Despite prohibitory orders, outfits like the VHP and the Bajrang Dal, on Wednesday morning held the “Tambula Prashne” ritual inside the Rama Anjaneya Temple, located just a few metres away from the mosque. This is a ritual which is said to be widely practised in coastal Karnataka to find out the truth from the previous generations.

After the “temple-like structure” was found at the 700-year-old mosque in Malali during renovation work, the Karnataka court had ordered the authorities of the mosque to stop the work for the time being. And Right-Wing outfits did not waste any time to come forward and stake their claim to the mosque, stating that they will find the truth through rituals like the “Tambula Prashne” and “Ashtamangala Prashne”. It was after this, that the Mangaluru City Commissioner N Shashi Kumar imposed prohibitory orders around the mosque.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra KV appealed to the people to maintain peace and said that the matter is currently before the court, which will take the appropriate decision.
