The statement of Karnataka Congress chief of being ‘civil’ in politics came as an apology after a post from the official handle of Karnataka Congress on PM Modi triggered a strong response from the BJP.

New Delhi: Day after Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel launched an attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling him a drug addict, state Congress president DK Shivakumar appealed to his counterpart to be civil.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Shivakumar said, “I believe we should be civil and respectful in politics, even to our opponents.” The Karnataka Congress chief also expressed regrets over a previous post from the official handle of the party’s state unit against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which had triggered a strong response from the BJP.

Shivakumar in his tweet also asked BJP to apologise for its state president’s remarks against Congress leader and Kerala MP Rahul Gandhi.

“I have always believed that civil and parliamentary language is a non-negotiable pre-requisite for political discourse. An uncivil tweet made by a novice social media manager through the Karnataka Congress official Twitter handle is regretted and stands withdrawn,” he said.

In response to the Karnataka Congress’ tweet calling PM Modi an “angutha chhap” (illiterate), Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar had launched an attack on Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday alleging that the Congress leader was a “drug addict and drug peddler”.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday former Karnataka chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy had alleged that people only learnt “how to watch blue films” in the shakhas of Hindu right-wing group the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Responding to which, BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal challenged Kumaraswamy to talk directly about BJP instead of commenting on the RSS. Yatnal lashed out at the Congress and JD(S) in the state as he said Siddaramaiah, Kumaraswamy and DK Shivakumar have “completely lost their minds”. He also went on to hit out at Rahul Gandhi saying “he is always high on Opium”.

Earlier last month, Kateel had called Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah a ‘terrorist’. “I feel that Siddaramaiah is a terrorist,” Kateel was reported as saying in response to the Congress leader’s criticism of the RSS.
