Kerala Logs 17 New Omicron Cases Taking Its Total Tally To 345 Infections

Ernakulam District recorded the highest number of Omicron Cases followed by Palakkad and others.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala on Monday reported 17 fresh cases of Omicron taking the total number of people infected with the new variant of COVID-19 to 345, the state health department said here.

Of the 17 patients reported on Monday, eight were from Ernakulam district, two from Palakkad and one each from Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, a health department release said.

Of these, 13 of the Omicron-infected persons had come from low-risk nations and four from high-risk countries.

While nine patients had come from UAE, the remaining came from Qatar, Poland, UK and the US.

“With this, Omicron has been confirmed for a total of 345 people in the state. Of them, 231 came from low-risk countries and 78 from high-risk countries. A total of 34 people were infected through contact,” the release said.

According to the state health department, there is a strict COVID-19 protocol in place to control crowds at public and private functions in Kerala. The maximum number of people who can attend weddings and posthumous ceremonies is 50. The state has added that strict action will be taken to control crowds in the state. However, schools will continue to function.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Kerala has inoculated more than 4.8 crore people so far. As per data, 4,80,44,941 doses of Covid-19 vaccine has been administered till Jan 10. For the age group 15-18 years, over 4 lakh adolescents have been vaccinated. As per government data, 4,84,810 doses have been administered to the 15-18 age group.

India saw a single-day rise of 1,79,723 coronavirus infections taking the total tally to 3,57,07,727, including 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant reported across 27 states and union territories so far, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Monday morning.

Of the total 4,033 cases of Omicron variant, 1,552 have recovered or migrated. Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 1,216 Omicron cases, followed by Rajasthan 529, Delhi 513 and Karnataka 441. Kerala follows with 345 infections while Gujarat logged 236 cases of Omicron variant so far.
