Forget Comfort Food, Here Are 5 Weird Food Pairings To Shock You Out Of WFH Tedium

Our relationship with food has undergone a radical change since the pandemic hit us. With stress levels high and eateries largely closed, a plethora of bizarre and unique dishes have emerged online which give an interesting and unique spin to traditional preparation.

Our relationship with food has undergone a radical change since the pandemic hit us. The first lockdown produced quarantine chefs and new food trends. Now the new curbs imposed in the new year makes us seek solace in food once again.

There’s a sense of Deja Vu as we all hunker down once again. In such grim times when families are being pushed ever closer to the brink of collapse, food has been nothing but an ‘agony aunt’ that satiates their every need.

With stress levels high and eateries largely closed, a plethora of bizarre and unique dishes have emerged online which give an interesting and unique spin to traditional preparation. We crawled Twitter for the top five weird yet mouth-watering combos that rescued many users from their dark feelings and set them on a weirdly soothing and consoling gastronomic journey.

1. Sweet Potato Fries + Maple Syrup

Don’t make a face already. People have actually tried it. Sweet potatoes can always be chosen over regular potatoes as they contain antioxidants that may help in the fight against cancer. When the maple syrup is drizzled over the oven baked potato fries, the combination can become a perfect evening WFH snack to munch on. Plain Greek yogurt and sugar-free syrup can be substituted to make it lighter. Remember to soak the potatoes in cold water as it helps to remove the starch from the outside of the potato. This will make the fries crispier on the outside and soft in the middle. Lastly, brush it over with the maple syrup and you are good to go.

2. Peanut Butter + Burger

Yes, you heard it right. These burgers are slathered with peanut butter. Peanut butter burger usually runs the risk of getting too dry. One can add some Mayo to avoid the dryness. Another alternative is to place the peanut butter in the microwave, and heat it for 30 seconds. Once the time is up, stir the peanut butter well to make sure it’s melting evenly. Adding melted peanut butter in chicken (if opting for non-veg) and paneer (if opting for veg) patties will make this meal juicier. Make sure to not overcook the burger. This salty combination will be an ideal companion for the food lovers. Make sure you’ve got some extra napkins on hand for this one, it’s worth it!

3. Coca-Cola + Chicken

Netflix and chill with this sweet and salty combo? The fizzy soda content gives chicken a sweet and syrupy flavour. Coca-Cola when mixed together in the recipe can be used as a marinade to soak into the chicken. The sweet and acidic flavour tenderizes the meat. The Cola is usually mixed with a soya sauce, ketchup or barbeque sauce to bring out the rich flavour. Some might also use diet coke that makes it a protein-packed, low fat and healthy meal. Once marinated, one can add tacos, chips to try variations.

4. Popcorn + Ketchup

Working from home can be tedious and exhausting. A crunchy, tasty alternative to butter popcorn might not be one of the weirdest combinations to think of at that time. Besides, the meal does not take much of your time and is easy to make. One can crank it up a notch by adding melted cheese with chili sauce or hot sauce for an intriguing, salty combination. After all, a little spice makes everything nice.

5. Honey + Pizza

I know, I know, you are thinking whaaat? But bear with me when I say these three words… Sweet And Salty. Drizzling oregano and chili flakes over pizza is something we’ve all heard of. But ever considered drizzling honey over pizza? A little brush won’t harm as honey compliments cheese almost all the time. Ideal amount would be at least three tablespoons of honey. In fact, a pizza enthusiast has said that “the heat makes it ideal for foods that have a bit of fat because it cuts right through it.”

They all might sound ridiculous but worth a try. After all, food is all about experimentation and exploration, right?
