Move Over Dalgona Coffee and Banana Bread, The New Favourite Pandemic Fad is ‘Wordle’

A play-once-in-a-day word game is the best pandemic fad we’ve seen so far.

It seems like after baking an incessant amount of banana bread, many glasses of Dalgona Coffee, and scrolling till there are no more reels to see, the internet is finally going crazy about something genuinely cool – a word game called Wordle.

Built by Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, the game is simple, yet addictive. On November 1, 90 people played the game. On January 2, just over two months later, it was played by more than 3,00,000 people. The game has seen a meteoric rise to fame.

I may come across as a nerd, but this is the pandemic fad moment that I’ve been waiting for, and here’s why the game is absolute genius.

1. You can play only once a day!

There’s something about not being able to play endlessly, that really makes you give it your best shot in the one attempt you get every day! It’s not like Candy Crush with endless levels or Ludo King, where you can spend hours doing the same thing. You just get one shot, every day. It’s a sense of scarcity that has its own charm.

2. Wordle is a love story

Being the sucker for romance that I am, what makes Wordle so special is that there’s a love story at the core of it. The New York Times has reported that the maker “knew his partner loved word games, so he created a guessing game for just the two of them. As a play on his last name, he named it Wordle.”

His partner Palak Shah loves Spelling Bees and Crosswords, and so Wardle made it for them to play to pass time in the pandemic. Quite sweet, right?

3. Zero ads and flashy graphics

Every game I’ve played in recent times has been interrupted once in three minutes by thirty second advertisements that completely ruin the game. Sometimes, these ads are even added as things to watch, to earn a few extra points or rewards. Then there are sounds, graphics, and elaborate colour schemes that make the game a full-blown show sometimes.

Wordle is as simple as it gets. One single pop-up explaining rules. Plain background. No interruptions, ads or distractions. Just a keyboard and playing board, that’s it.

4. Word games are for all

Word Games are easy, fun and everyone can play! It doesn’t require hand-eye coordination, insane memory skills or dumb luck. It’s just wit and intellect. What’s not to like?

5. No upgrades that need money

Every game on the internet also has a paid version that they’ll continuously try to sell. I love that Wordle can’t have an upgrade just because of how simple and straightforward it is.

According to the maker, it plans to remain free and ad-free. Wardle said in an interview, “I don’t understand why something can’t just be fun,” and that aptly sums up what makes Wordle the best pandemic fad we’ve seen so far!
