The Indian National Congress has named Mallikarjun Kharge for the post of Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the Rajya Sabha, on Friday (February 12). The LOP is currently held by MP Ghulam Nabi Azad, whose term will end on February 15, 2021.
Karnataka Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge has been the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha from 2014-2019. According to party sources, Kharge was seen as the frontrunner as he has been vocal in opposing the contentious farm laws. In Lok Sabha, he was seen attacking the Centre on its claim to double farmer’s income through farm laws and later sparked off a major row between Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress after his ‘khoon ki kheti’ jibe in Rajya Sabha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his farewell address to Ghulam Nabi Azad broke down on Tuesday (February 9), he said, “The person who will replace Ghulam Nabi ji (as Leader of Opposition) will have difficulty matching his work because he was not only concerned about his party but also about the country and the House.” He praised the opposition leader for his vision of his own party and country.
