New Delhi: Former Chief Minister and Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Farooq Abdullah tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday (March 30). His son Omar Abdullah tweeted, “My father has tested positive for COVID-19 & is showing some symptoms. I will be self-isolating along with other family members until we get ourselves tested. I request anyone who has come in to contact with us over the last few days to take all the mandated precautions.”

This comes just weeks after the senior politician received the first dose of the COVID vaccine. He was inoculated on March 2 under the second phase of vaccination in which people above the age of 60 and people above the age of 45 with co-morbidities were vaccinated.

Even then Omar Abdullah had tweeted to thank the medical staff at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar. “Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at SKIMS, Srinagar. Today my 85-year-old father & my mother had their first COVID jab. My father has a number of health issues including being on immunosuppressants for a kidney transplant. If he can get the vaccine, you should as well,” Omar had tweeted.

India started its vaccination drive on January 16 after the government granted Oxford’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin emergency use authorisation. Under phase one of the vaccination drive, Health Care and Frontline Workers were administered vaccine doses whose number was estimated to be around 3 crores.

Furthermore, the vaccine candidate by Novavax also started its trials at the Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune. This is SII’s second vaccine after Covishield and is expected to be launched in September.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO, SII tweeted, “Covovax trials finally begin in India; the vaccine is made through a partnership with @Novavax and SerumInstIndia. It has been tested against African and UK variants of COVID19 and has overall efficacy of 89%. Hope to launch by September 2021!.”
