New Delhi: Asian Games gold medallist boxer Dingko Singh on Thursday (June 10) died after a long three-year battle with liver cancer. Dingko who won gold in 1998 Asian is also an Arjuna Award and Padma Shri recipient. The boxer was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and had also suffered from COVID-19 and jaundice the previous year.

Prime Minister tweeted his condolences on the death of the wrestler.

“Shri Dingko Singh was a sporting superstar, an outstanding boxer who earned several laurels and also contributed to furthering the popularity of boxing. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the PM said in a tweet.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also joined the PM in expressing grief at the demise of the 42-year-old.

“I’m deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Dingko Singh. One of the finest boxers India has ever produced, Dinko’s gold medal at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games sparked the Boxing chain reaction in India. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. RIP Dinko,” he tweeted.

Olympic medal winner Mary Kom who considered Dingko as one of her idols when she grew up also expressed shock at the sudden news.

“He was a rockstar, a legend, a rage. I remember I used to queue up to watch him fight in Manipur. He inspired me. He was my hero. It is a huge loss. He has gone too soon,” she told PTI.

Another Olympic medal winner Vijender Singh in a tweet said, “My sincerest condolences on this loss May his life’s journey & struggle forever remain a source inspiration for the upcoming generations. I pray that the bereaved family finds the strength to overcome this period of grief & mourning.”

After his retirement, the Boxer who has also served in the Indian Navy took up coaching.
