Glasgow: Artem Dovbyk’s first international goal in the dying embers of extra time helped Ukraine knock out Sweden out of the ongoing EURO 2020 on Tuesday (local time). A free-scoring England side outclassed Germany to secure a spot in the quarterfinals as well.

Both Sweden and Ukraine had started brightly in Glasgow, Roman Yaremchuk’s early shot kept out by Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen while at the other end, Alexander Isak curled a shot a metre wide.

However, Ukraine were first to strike in the 27th minute with Andriy Yarmolenko working the ball onto his left foot and curling a lavish pass with the outside of his boot for midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko to hammer a shot past Olsen.

Sweden responded positively to this and were back on terms just two minutes before the break. Isak found Emil Forsberg outside the Ukraine penalty area and his well-struck shot took a deflection off Illia Zabarnyi on its way past Georgiy Bushchan.

The second half was similarly open, with both teams going at it but neither could conjure a winner as this round of 16 clash headed to extra time.

Sweden lost Marcus Danielson to a red card after a dangerous challenge on Artem Besedin in the first additional period. When it looked like another Round of 16 was heading towards penalties, Ukraine upped the tempo and found the breakthrough in the added time of extra time after Zinchenko’s pinpoint cross was headed in by substitute Dovbyk to spark wild celebrations.

In the other game, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane bagged for England to beat Germany 2-0 at the Wembly stadium.

After an evenly contested first half, went teams went in on level terms at half time. England dominated position, while Joachim Low’s side tried to use their pace on the counter.

However, this tactics did not work out for the Germans as Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice’s colossus display helped England keep the 2014 World Cup winners at bay all game.

England will now face Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
