Bucharest: After a relentless encounter France got knocked out of the ongoing Euro 2020 at the Arena National Stadium on Monday (local time).
France suffered a surprise defeat on penalties at the hands of Switzerland in the round of 16 clash and as a result, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winners and EURO 2016 finalists were knocked out of the ongoing tournament.
Switzerland beat France 5-4 on penalties and as a result, Vladimir Petkovic’s side will now take on Spain in the quarterfinals next.
At the end of 90 minutes, the game stood level at 3-3 and as a result, the match went into extra time. No team was able to break the deadlock in extra time and hence the match progressed to a penalty shootout.
For France, Karim Benzema bagged a brace while Paul Pogba scored a long-range banger. On the other hand, Haris Seferovic scored two goals for Switzerland while Mario Gavranovic scored in the dying embers of normal time to take the match into ET.
Pogba’s second half goal gave France a 3-2 lead and it looked like Didier Deschamps’ side are set to secure their place in the quarters. However, Gavranovic registered the goal in the dying minutes of the match, and as a result, the match progressed into extra time and then a penalty shootout.
Switzerland managed to triumph over France in penalties and now they would be seen in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, Spain beat Croatia 5-3 after a thrilling extra time clash. In the match, Croatia took an early lead after Pedri’s miss pass found the back of the net due to a poor touch from Unai Simon in the Spain goal. However, Sanabria levelled the score soon after in the first half before Cesar Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres to put Spain put 3-1 up.
With 5 minutes left to normal time, David Orsic and Mario Pasalic struck twice to take the game into extra time. Luis Enrique’s side then found the cutting edge in the ET as Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal bagged for Spain to secure their spot in the next round.
