EURO 2020: Thorgan Hazard Helps Belgium Knock Out Defending Champions Portugal

New Delhi: Thorgan Hazard’s first half strike helped Belgium knock out defending champions Portugal from the ongoing Euro 2020 on Sunday (local time) at the Estadio La Caturja de Stadium in Seville.

The “Red Devils” beat Portugal 1-0 in their round of 16 clash and as a result, they have booked their place in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Belgium would now take on Italy in the quarterfinals on Friday, July 3.

The first half between the two sides saw just one goal as Hazard’s long-range curler past Rui Patricio in the 42nd minute and this gave Belgium the breakthrough.

The goal came after a well-worked counter attack, after the Belgium backline managed to see off a high-press from Portugal.

In the second half, Portugal tried their best to level the score but Belgium’s defence stood tall and held off all attacks spearheaded by the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo.

During the 90 minutes, Belgium managed to create just one shot on target while Portugal having four shots on target.

Ronaldo’s side managed to keep more ball possession as well, but the side was unable to convert them into goals.

Earlier in the day, Czech Republic outclassed Netherlands to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.

The Czech side took the lead in the 68th minute through Tomas Holes, after a hardly contested first half. Things got even worse for the Dutch when Matthijs De Ligt saw a straight red after a VAR review for a potential handball.

Down to ten men, Czech Republic intensified their attack on goal and bagged a second goal through Patrik Schick in the 80th minute to win the match 2-0.
