Lionel Messi’s Argentina To Face Italy In Finalissima 2022 At Wembley Stadium

It will be just the third edition of the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions that pits together the champions of Europe Italy against champions of South America Argentina.

New Delhi: Italy and Argentina are all set to square off against each other on Wednesday at the Wembley stadium, London in the Finalissima 2022 with the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions at stake.

It will be just the third edition of the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions that pits together the champions of Europe Italy against champions of South America Argentina.

This showpiece encounter ‘Finalissima’ will give fans the chance to watch the current champions of the world’s two best footballing continents contest the coveted CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions.

Twenty-nine years after its last edition, the relaunch of this legendary footballing encounter is the result of the long-standing partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL.

In previous two editions, winners from Europe and South America met, France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in Paris in 1985 and in the second edition, Argentina defeated Denmark in Mar del Plata in 1993. This is the first time that the final will be played at a neutral venue.

Italy will take the field on the back of a disappointing run as they failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Meanwhile, Argentina are on an outstanding 31-match unbeaten streak from July 2019. Lionel Scaloni will be hoping to add another trophy in the cabinet by winning the Finalissima 2022.

Argentina’s last defeat came against Brazil in the 2019 Copa America. Italy have a record of two wins, two losses and two draws each in their last six games. Giorgio Chiellini will be making his final appearance for Italy on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi is the highest appearance-maker for Argentina, with 160 caps to his name. Argentina have managed to keep three clean sheets in their last five matches, while Italy have managed just one shut-out in their previous five games. Italy have all of their last four meeting with Argentina.
