New Delhi: A stadium in Pune under the premises of Army Sports Institute is set to be named after Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The stadium will be named as ‘Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium’ in Pune Cantt.
As per reports, the official naming ceremony of the stadium is set to take place on August 23 and will be carried out by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Singh will also be accompanied by the Army Lieutenant Governer Jai Singh Nain and chief General M M Narvane on this tour.
During his visit, Rajnath Singh will facilitate the other sixteen Olympians and will also carry out a naming ceremony of the stadium.
The Defence Minister will also be addressing the troops and will interact with budding sportsmen.
Earlier this month, Indian Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra scripted history when he won India’s first ever gold medal in track and athletics at the Tokyo Olympics. Chopra produced a throw of 87.58 metres to win the gold medal for his country.
This was also India’s tenth gold medal at the Olympics and the second individual gold medal since Abhinav Bindra secured a gold finish in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in shooting.
Chopra’s podium finish also meant India recorded its third medal in athletics after Norman Pritchard won silver in 200 metres and 200 metres hurdles at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
