The Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 was given a rousing reception when they arrived in New Delhi after India’s best-ever performance at the Summer Games. India won one gold medal, two silver medals, and four bronze medals at the Olympics. Previously, the two silver medals and four bronze won at the 2012 London Olympics was the best performance.
Sports Authority of India Director General Sandeep Pradhan was heading the delegation that welcomed the Indian athletes home.
The Indian women’s field hockey team was one of the first to arrive after a brilliant performance where they missed the bronze by a whisker.
The Indian women’s team cut a cake which congratulated them for their best ever performance at the Olympics.
After cutting the cake, the team sang the national anthem.
Wrestler Ravi Dahiya was also given a hero’s welcome as he won a silver medal for India in wrestling.
He was joined by Neeraj Chopra, who brought India’s first-ever Gold medal for India at the Olympics in Athletics.
Ace shuttler PV Sindhu who won bronze and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu who won silver had to return early as they had to leave Tokyo within 48 hours of the completion of the medal ceremony due to Covid-19 norms.
Bajrang Punia brought a bronze medal in wrestling while the Indian Men’s Hockey team scripted history as they ended a 41-year-drought to win a medal at the Olympics.
Lovlina Lovlina Borgohain brought a bronze medal for India in boxing, a sport where the country’s hope for a podium finish looked bleak after Mary Kom exited the tournament after losing the match in controversial circumstances.
India had sent a 228-member delegation to the Olympics and despite some of them faltering due to pressure at the greatest sporting event, the future does look bright for India at the Olympics.
