New Delhi: Dramatic scenes unfolded at the Srivari Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai on Thursday, during the AIADMK General Council Meeting, with senior leaders of the party throwing their weight behind Opposition Leader Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) and backing his demand for “single leadership”, much to the dismay of rival and AIADMK Chief Coordinator O Paneerselvam (OPS).

The General Council rejected all the 23 draft resolutions and also stated that the only demand of the council is to bring in a system of single leadership for the party. It was also decided that the resolution for single leadership will be passed during the next meeting of the council, which is scheduled to be held on July 11. As soon as the announcement of the next meeting was announced, OPS was seen walking out of the meeting, along with his supporters.

The process of passage of the 23 pre-decided resolutions was taken up immediately after the meeting commenced, amidst massive sloganeering by the party cadre. Earlier this morning, traffic came to a standstill in roads leading to the mandapam at Vanagaram, as hundreds of party supporters had gathered on the streets.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court in an order, during the wee hours of Thursday, restrained the party’s General Council from adopting any new resolution on unitary leadership and stated that only the 23 resolutions that have already been prepared by the party can be discussed and adopted in the meeting.

The Madras HC, on Wednesday had also refused to restrain the General Council meeting. This had raised hopes for EPS, who hoped to get himself elevated as General Secretary of the party. It is also important to note that Late party matriarch, J Jayalalithaa was declared AIADMK’s eternal general secretary in 2017 to honour her memory and the party had announced then that no one else would be brought to that position.
