New Delhi: Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi overtook Apple and became world’s second-largest producer of smartphones in the second quarter of 2021, right behind Samsung said a report by market research firm Canalys.
The Global smartphone shipments increased by 12 per cent in the second quarter of 2021 with Samsung shipping the largest number at 19 per cent, followed by Xiomi at 17 per cent and Apple at 14 per cent.
Xiaomi took the second spot for the first time ever at 17 per cent with a soaring hike of 83 per cent annual growth rate as compared to a steady 15 per cent for Samsung and marginal one per cent growth for Apple. While Oppo and Vivo maintain a strong growth momentum of 28 per cent and 27 per cent securing number 4 and number 5 spots respectively to complete the top five smartphone makers global ranking. The Chinese smartphone maker faces stiff competition from other Chinese manufacturers–Vivo and Oppo.
”Xiaomi is growing its overseas business rapidly”, said Canalys research manager Ben Stanton.
It increased its shipment 300 per cent in Latin America, 150 per cent in Africa and 50 per cent in Western Europe. It is still largely skewed towards the mass market, however, and compared with Samsung and Apple, its average selling price is around 40 per cent and 75 per cent cheaper respectively.
So, a major priority for Xiaomi this year is to grow sales of its Hugh-end devices, such as the M11 Ultra, he further added.
