The final countdown has started, the stage is set as the City of Birmingham gears up for the big event. The Commonwealth Games is all set to begin on July 28.
Birmingham is all decked up to welcome supporters from across the globe. These Games will be the largest event held in region as the city will host 11 days of events, across 15 competition venues.
The official mascot Perry, the multi-coloured bull is out on streets welcoming the guests, sportspersons, officials. 5000+ athletes from 72 Commonwealth Nations will compete in 280 events.
For the first time in the history, more medals are at stake for women’s athletes as compared to men’s. There will be 134 men’s medal events and 136 women’s medal events in the games.
30,000 spectators will cheer for world champion sportspersons and the performers in Alexander Stadium. The opening ceremony will be in the presence of Prince Charles. UK’s iconic band Duran Duran will perform at the opening ceremony.
Two time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will be India’s flagbearer. Men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh will be the second flagbearer.
India has sent a squad comprising 215 athletes and 107 officials. The opening ceremony will begin at 11:30 pm Indian Standard time while in the UK it is scheduled to air at 7 pm local time.
