Covid-19 India Update | 24 July: 39,097 New Cases, Vaccinations For Children Likely By Sept: AIIMS Director

India reported 39,097 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. This is the third time in a week when the daily new cases have gone below the 40,000 mark. 35,087 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. With this the recovery rate has increased to 97.35%.

Daily positivity rate reaches at 2.40%, less than 3% for 33 consecutive days. India’s Active Caseload is currently at 4,08,977. Active cases now constitute 1.31% of total cases.

AIIMS Director, Randeep Guleria has said that the vaccines will be available for children in the coming few weeks or latest by September. He said that the trials for children are presently underway at the Hyderabad-based firm- Bharat Biotech and the results are expected to be released by September.

Southern states continue to remain a worry as India fights against the Covid-19 pandemic. The two most affected states recording maximum Covid-19 cases are Kerala and Maharashtra.

Kerala has reported the highest cases in the last 50 days. Kerala reported 17,518 new Covid-19 cases, 132 deaths and 11,067 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The Kerala government has imposed a full lockdown for this weekend that is July 24 and July 25, after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the state. Maharashtra reported 6,753 new Covid-19 cases, 167 deaths and 5,979 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

Apart from South India, some states of the northeast, such as Assam and Manipur continued to report a spike in Covid-19 cases. On 24th July, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah will review the coronavirus situation in the northeast with chief ministers, chief secretaries and police chiefs of the states in the region.

In a bid to ramp up the vaccination process, India’s cumulative Covid-19 vaccination coverage crosses 42.78 Crore.

The world Health Organisation said on 21st July that the Delta variant has been identified in 124 countries and is expected to become the dominant strain worldwide within the coming months.
