India reported 38,628 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 13% lower than yesterday. 40,017 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. With this the recovery rate has increased to 97.37%. Daily positivity rate reaches at 2.21%; less than 3% for last 12 days. India’s Active Caseload is currently at 4,12,153. Active cases now constitute 1.29% of total cases.
Southern states continue to remain a worry as India fights against the Covid-19 pandemic. The three most affected states recording maximum Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours are Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Considered more contagious than chickenpox, the delta variant has now pushed up the R-value above one for India from 0.93 a month ago which means more average people will contract the disease from an infected person. The reproduction factor in India is 1.01. At least 10 states have an R-value higher than the national average of 1.01 with Delhi and Maharashtra inching closer to match the national average. Among states, Madhya Pradesh has the highest R-value in the country followed by Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland. The number is above 1 for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well.
In a bid to ramp up the vaccination process, India’s cumulative Covid-19 vaccination coverage has surpassed 50 Crore. India’s drug regulatory agency has received applications for emergency use authorisation for the Covid-19 vaccines from Novavax and Johnson & Johnson.
Serum Institute of India’s CEO and owner Adar Poonawalla said that another Covid-19 vaccine, Covovax being manufactured by his firm, will hopefully be launched in October this year for adults. He said that Covovax vaccine for kids will hopefully launch in the first quarter of 2022.
